Mike Ranen, Ph.D.
Dean Ranen works with students in Apley, Hollis, Holworthy, Lionel, Mass Hall, Mower, Stoughton, and Straus dorms. He was born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, home of the infamous witch trials. He received his B.A. in chemistry at Haverford College. After two years teaching and coaching at an independent school outside of Philadelphia he headed up to Cambridge to complete a Ph.D. in earth and planetary sciences from Harvard where he studied moon rocks and meteorites. He also served as a Resident Tutor in Winthrop House and an Assistant Dean of Student Life at Harvard Summer School. After some time working as a secondary school teacher and administrator in Washington, D.C. he is thrilled to be back at Harvard working with freshman students. Dean Ranen is passionate about New England sports teams, cooking, and reality television about cooking. He lives with his wife Ellen, their son Toby and their two cats Nancy Kerrigan and Simba.
