Katie Derzon, Ph.D.
Dean Derzon works with students in Apley, Hollis, Holworthy, Lionel, Mass Hall, Mower, Stoughton, and Straus dorms. She is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and received her B.A. at the University of Wisconsin. After college she served in the Peace Corps and returned home to pursue an M.A. at Marquette University. While there she worked with a non-profit that assisted women returning from prison, and this experience sparked her interest in mass incarceration. Dean Derzon completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at Harvard, focusing on how the prevalence of prison sentences has affected parenthood in low-income communities. During her time as a graduate student, she worked for seven years as a Resident Tutor and Sophomore Advising Coordinator in Leverett House. More recently she served as the Fellow for Undocumented Students at the College. Dean Derzon can often be seen walking through the Yard with her mini-dachshund, Peanut.
